Amer Awan is working as a Cataract & Retina Specialist and Chief of Ophthalmology at Shifa International Hospital Islamabad, Pakistan. He is a Professor of Ophthalmology at Shifa Taameer-e-millat University Islamabad. He is also an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London & Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow. 

After completing higher specialist training in Ophthalmology in the UK, he did a vitreoretinal fellowship from well known Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, Glasgow, UK. He received FRCOphth and FRCSEd diplomas from the prestigious UK Royal Colleges. He specializes in adult and pediatric retinal disorders. He has a special interest in sutureless microincision vitrectomy systems such as 25 and 27 gauge to manage simple and complex retinal diseases. 

To acknowledge his contributions and achievements, the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons, Glasgow, awarded him FRCS Ophthalmology. He has completed a one-year Harvard Medical School surgical leadership program from Harvard University, USA, and has been awarded fellowships from the American Society of Retina Specialists & American College of Surgeons. He has been awarded the Lateef Chaudhry Gold Medal & President Excellence Award to recognize his contributions to the vitreoretinal specialty.

He is a council member of the Asia Pacific Ophthalmic Trauma Society, Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan Federal, Pakistan Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons, and Pakistan Vitreo Retinal Society. He enjoys teaching medical students and postgraduate trainees and conducts instructional courses for ophthalmologists and retinal surgeons. He has been invited as a guest speaker and surgeon to perform live surgery in various national and international meetings. He is an avid researcher who has presented at national and international meetings. He has been on the reviewer & Editorial board of various international journals and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals.
