Prof Ursell is an NHS Consultant at Epsom & St Helier University NHS Trust appointed in 2001, Honorary Professor University of Bradford School of Optometry & Visual Science and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Biomedical Education, St Georges Hospital Medical School, London.  He runs specialist clinics covering corneal disease and advanced cataract surgery. 

Prof Ursell is the Immediate Past President of UKISCRS, the Ophthalmic advisor to the Royal Marsden Hospital Drug Development Unit, RCOpth lead for Dementia, UK representative to the EU (UEMS) and the European Board of Ophthalmology. He sits on the International Committee of RCOphth & the Education Committee of ESCRS.

Prof Ursell has served as Departmental Lead, Lead for Audit and Lead for Cataract Surgery. He combines NHS clinical commitments with undergraduate & postgraduate training, ongoing research projects and run a busy private practice in Wimbledon. 

Prof Ursell is an acknowleged leader in cataract surgery and is regularly invited to lecture at International surgical conferences, advise manufacturers on advisory panels and has performed over 12.000 cataract procedures on some of the most complex cases.
